What Is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment that effectively reduces wrinkles and other visible signs of aging. Available at Ashburn Laser & Skincare MedSpa, our clinic offers a variety of safe, effective injectable options to rejuvenate your skin.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox targets wrinkles and lines that form from repeated facial expressions like frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows. Over time, these movements leave permanent creases in the skin.

The active ingredient, onabotulinumtoxinA, is derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. When injected into the muscles, it blocks nerve signals and prevents the muscle contractions that lead to deep wrinkles. By temporarily relaxing specific facial muscles, Botox smooths the skin above, giving you a more relaxed and youthful appearance.

In addition to smoothing wrinkles, Botox can also lift certain areas of the face—such as the eyebrows—creating a more open, youthful look.

When Will I See Results?

Botox results typically start to appear within 24-48 hours, with full effects visible in about two weeks. Results can last up to four months.

Who Can Benefit From Botox?

Botox is ideal for anyone looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. A consultation with Dr. Nasrin Ejtemaee at Ashburn Laser & Skincare MedSpa will help assess your individual needs and goals.

Botox also offers therapeutic benefits, helping treat conditions like migraines, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating.

Is Botox Safe?

Yes! Botox is a safe, FDA-approved non-invasive treatment for reducing fine lines and wrinkles without the need for surgery. Though Botox is widely known for its cosmetic uses, it was initially FDA-approved in 1989 for the treatment of blepharospasm (involuntary eyelid twitching). In 2002, the FDA expanded its approval to include cosmetic purposes.

Areas of the Face That Botox Can Address:

The specialists at Ashburn Laser & Skincare MedSpa are trained to deliver natural-looking results that allow you to retain your ability to make facial expressions without the “frozen” look.

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Eyebrows

What Should You Expect with Botox Injections?

Before Treatment:

A consultation will help Dr. Ejtemaee assess your goals and determine if Botox is the right option for you. Photos may be taken to document before and after results.

During Treatment:

Using ultra-fine needles, small amounts of Botox are injected into targeted muscles. The procedure is quick, with minimal discomfort, typically only a slight sting during the injections. No anesthesia is required.

After Treatment:

Some mild redness or swelling may occur at the injection sites, but this should subside quickly. Results will begin to appear within 24-48 hours, with full effects visible within two weeks. Botox results can last up to four months.

Tips for Botox:

Before Treatment:

  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours prior to treatment
  • Refrain from taking aspirin or blood-thinning medications for a week before treatment

After Treatment:

  • Avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours
  • Do not touch or rub the treated area for 12 hours
  • Stay out of direct sun exposure for 24 hours

Who Should Avoid Botox?

Botox may not be suitable for:

  • Those with a known allergy to Botox or cow’s milk protein
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People with neuromuscular disorders or certain medical conditions like heart disease or diabetes

Different Types of Botox

  • Botox Cosmetic: Used to treat facial wrinkles and fine lines
  • Botox Therapeutic: Used for medical conditions like excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), muscle spasms, and migraines

Although both types contain the same botulinum toxin, they are used for different purposes.
