Laser hair removal can produce lasting hair reduction, but it cannot treat every strand in a single visit because each one follows its own growth schedule. At Ashburn Laser & Skincare MedSpa in Ashburn, Virginia, our laser hair removal plans account for these changing growth cycles. Our providers, Nasrin Ejtemaee, MD, and Massie Zekri, bring relevant training and experience to your care. Dr. Ejtemaee is board-certified in family medicine and certified to perform laser hair removal, while Massie has more than 20 years of medical cosmetic experience.
Hair Grows in Different Phases
The laser uses light energy to heat the pigment associated with the hair root. Treatment works best during the active growth phase, when the strand is still connected to its source of growth.
The challenge is that nearby hairs do not all enter this phase at once. During your appointment, some are actively growing, while others are resting or transitioning. Those inactive hairs may become treatable several weeks later, which is why one visit cannot reach the entire area.
Each session treats a new group of actively growing hairs. Keeping up with the recommended schedule helps us work through those cycles rather than repeatedly treating the same small portion of growth. Our guide to what to know before starting laser hair removal covers additional ways to prepare for a treatment series.
Why Appointments Are Several Weeks Apart
We typically space laser hair removal visits four to six weeks apart. This gives resting hairs time to enter a stage when they can respond to the laser. Scheduling appointments too close together will not speed up that natural process, while long gaps may extend your overall timeline.
Treatment areas may also progress at different rates. Hair density, thickness, hormonal influences, and the pace of growth can vary across the face and body. These differences are one reason your recommended number of visits may not match someone else’s.
Our Lumenis® Splendor X™ system combines Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths, allowing settings to be adjusted for different skin tones and hair characteristics. That flexibility helps us treat a wider range of patients, but no device can make every hair enter active growth at the same time.
What You May See Between Sessions
Treated hairs often shed gradually after an appointment. As your series continues, you may notice that regrowth becomes patchier, finer, lighter, or slower. Seeing new strands does not necessarily mean your previous visit was unsuccessful. They may have been resting when the area was last treated.
Laser treatment is intended to produce long-term reduction rather than guarantee that no hair will ever return. Hormonal changes and other factors may contribute to future growth, and some patients benefit from occasional maintenance. Our article on whether laser hair removal is permanent explains these expectations in more detail.
Why You Should Shave Instead of Wax
Shaving trims the visible portion of the hair while leaving the root available for treatment. Waxing, plucking, and threading pull the strand out from below the skin, removing the pigment the laser needs to find.
Follow our team’s instructions about shaving, sun exposure, and skincare before each visit. You can also review what to expect from laser hair removal as you prepare.
